Bułas company is a luthier’s family business. Their origin story begins in the 80’s when Piotr Bułas, inspired by the American culture and bluegrass music, decides to create his first banjo. However, a turn of fate conducted him elsewhere and after many months of working in the luthier’s shop he decides to try his hand at other professions. He takes a hold of many jobs including photography and repair of vintage cars.
Nevertheless, history decides to come full circle when his son Michał begins to be interested in historical reconstruction and broadly defined craftsmanship. This new passion requires digging up tools and freeing up space to work, which is why Piotr decides to revive the workshop and breathe a new spirit into his studio. Michał's presence and his interest in craftsmanship unleashes memories of his father's past hobby, at which point Piotr decides to repair an old banjo left in the corner for years. Michał starts to help and it turns out quite quickly that his and his dad's skills are complementary and working together gives better results. Motivated by this, they start to work on other instruments which lasts to the present day.
Bułas instruments are made with the greatest care and precision. The company is characterized by the highest quality of materials, which is obtained thanks to in-depth knowledge about the wood used, including how it should be processed and stored. Every element of the instrument is produced from scratch. The customer also has the possibility of designing an unique inlay, whose design can be created based on his own idea. Along with the impeccable attention paid to the appearance of the instrument, luthiers are aware that the most important feature is the quality of the sound that can be extracted from it. Thanks to appreciating the spirit of music and having the biggest stars of the bluegrass and folk-world scene as friends and coworkers, they know exactly how a great banjo and mandolin should sound like.
